landdirect.ie is the new generation of online services from the Land Registry of Ireland which extends and replaces the award winning Electronic Access Service (EAS).

The EAS was originally launched in August 1999 in order to provide direct customer access to the Land Registry’s database of computerised folios, which at the time was confined to registered land in Dublin and some folios relating to land in western seaboard counties. Over the intervening years, due to ambitious programmes such as the Document Imaging Project, the remaining folios have been computerised and, since July 2004, the Land Registry has provided online access to its entire register of over 1.8 million folios and corresponding Title Plans.

The launch of the landdirect.ie web portal on 28th April 2006 represents another major milestone in the development of online services in the Land Registry. The new portal brings together the services previously offered as part of the EAS and also provides additional functions and features based on the new Land Registry Digital Map.

From 28th April, the Land Registry online map detail included ‘seed points’ for registered parcels in counties Westmeath, Longford and Meath. Seed points have now been implemented in all twenty six counties. Seed points are location identifiers through which the registered land parcels have been linked to their corresponding folio(s) within the Land Registry database. They are displayed as a coloured point or dot on the map; red for freehold, green for leasehold, purple for sub-leasehold folios. The online map shows Land Registry seed points combined with either Ordnance Survey Ireland (OSi) topographical detail (this is the default) or OSi aerial photography (‘Orthophotography’). OSi aerial photos are available only when the map has been zoomed to an appropriate level.

Using the available functions, account holders will be able to go directly to a location on the Land Registry digital map in a number of ways and perform a variety of spatial/map queries. These include capabilities for customers to locate folios by:

  • Browsing and navigating the online map
  • Searching a database of postal addresses linked to the Land Registry map
Additional services based on the digital map will be rolled out on a county-by-county basis as the registered boundaries are digitised. We are pleased to announce that the digitisation programme has recently been completed in respect of County Longford and, following a programme of internal quality assurance, the digitised boundaries for that county are now available at www.landdirect.ie .Digitisation and quality assurance of data is ongoing in respect of counties Meath, Westmeath and Carlow each of which will be rolled out in early 2007.
